  2. with the themes of love (Amores 20BC, Ars
  3. amatoria 1 BC), mythology (Metamorphoses AD
  4. 2), and exile (Tristia AD 9-12). Born at
  5. Sulmo, Ovid studied rhetoric in Rome in
  6. preparation for a legal career, but soon
  7. turned to literature. In 8 BC he was banished
  8. by Augustus to Tomi, on the Black Sea, where
  9. he died. This punishment, supposedly for his
  10. immoral Ars amatoria, was probably because of
  11. some connection with Julia, the profligate
  12. daughter of Augustus.
